artwork pricing

01/08/22

Due to the rising cost of living, and a reassessment of outdated rates, my pricing assessment will be raised for commissions taken after this point.

I dislike doing this, but I hope you all understand ♥

This is a simple crash-course in how I go about pricing my artwork.

I've created a fair amount of Freeform artwork that doesn't fit into any more simple category I've worked with over the years, and in these circumstances I tend to work

pay-by-hour for clarity.

The simple categories style is something I've implemented for a long time due to the number of spaces I take commissions on and what kind of artwork that commissioners are more usually interested in. I've listed these by button below.

To a certain degree, I'm more than happy to just stack a few of these bits and pieces together into a larger work as you see fit. The more complex and the more expansive it gets, the more inclined I'll be to just bump it out to freeform work, but don't let that discourage you since these block price lists are based on time and effort in the first place!

freeform

(work by the hour)

By standard, I usually ask £15 - £30 per hour, dependent on the level of intricacy and design which needs to go into the piece, but for most work it will be on the lower end of this scale.

Unless it can be grouped otherwise then artwork will be put here for simplicity's sake, as would projects of a larger number of works that would escape the scope of a couple of them combined.

In the past, freeform works have included things like tattoo designs, web-based game art, cover art, mural design / application, portraits (of people and pets), digital painting, concept sketches etc.

The gallery contains some of these examples or other work that could fall into this umbrella, with estimates on price.

emotes, icons & interfaces

Since joining Twitch as a viewer, I've made art for multiple people's channels - including my own channel when I started streaming too. Since then, I've completed static and animated emotes, bit and sub badges. I've also created logos, backgrounds, and stream overlay screens.

  • Original static emotes are charged at £20

  • Original animated emotes start at £25

  • Icons for bits or subs start at £10

  • Other work like screens and logos will depend on the complexity but will be £10 +

  • Any design work such as mascots may add an extra charge on top.

Character

character

creatures & designs

Whether it's personal character designs or figure illustrations, this simple category is for those pieces. This would be the first choice for people who want their TTRPG characters brought to life, no previous art is required. I'm no stranger to producing fan artwork either, and am not adverse to working with media I have no personal experience with, as long as I get some direction on what I'm doing.

The way I field the varying degrees of detail in this category is to break it down by level of polish, and the amount of the character shown. Beyond this, there are a few details such as medium and any additional factors to tack on top.

The gallery notes a few examples and breakdowns of how this method works out.

If the character work is for a reason that has special specifications, let me know! Similarly, the exact amount of the body shown in each tier is at my discretion for composition reasons, but you can be specific if you need to be.

As standard, sketches come without colour but I can

discuss adding some basic colouring if requested.

The content itself can add extra charges, usually due to complexity. I tend to let complicated pieces stack in £5 increments also accounting for level of finish, for example a large amount of intricately patterned fabric on a winged character would count twice for a total of £10, but finished to polished standard would be more like £20.

My standard medium for these artwork is pencil, but if preferred I can swap out to purely digital artwork, or ink pen with digital colour. These options for all but digital sketches have an extra charge on them due to the technical detail or how much more planning has to go into them beforehand. Any other medium changes can be discussed with me but may stray into territory outside of this category.

Similarly, I'm happy to throw in a simple piece of scenery to place a character, but larger settings may have a smaller flat rate. Complex scenes may be charged at an hourly rate.

If there is a lot of work to do in making a cohesive impression of the character, especially with little outside direction, then I may ask some extra for this aspect, starting at £5.

Object

items & inanimates

This is a category born of a tangent to characters, most often in reference to items that may be encountered and need illustrating in a TTRPG.

It functions in a similar way to the character category only more simplified and applying to broader terms.

These are split into Sketches or Polished work, and start from £10 and £20 respectively.

Name what you're after and I can give you a hand. This could be a special sword, the contents of your wizard's pockets, a saddle for your friendly gryphon, or even a rough look at Baba Yaga's house. Larger sets of work or more expansive designs may be more suited to Freeform work.

mapwork

interior & exterior

I've always enjoyed creating maps, and I've recently separated them out to offer up as commissions.

Whether you need one for a TTRPG or your own original works, for purely decorative use or as a true representation, and available in multiple mediums and formats to suit your need.

These maps can be reflective of settlements, regions, and worlds, or the interiors of buildings,  cave systems, and so on.

Due to the variability involved, I calculate the costs of maps on several factors - such as scale, mediums, detail, and time spent to create overall, but the bottom rung price for mapwork is £40.

As always, whatever the amount of supplementary material you have is fine by me, but the less to work from may add to time spent on the work itself.

If you're after something reflecting the reality of settlement patterns and historical housing - either partially or in full - my Archaeology coursework was in fact on the topic of village formation, and I've gathered a lot of knowledge in general about world architecture through study and personal interest. This influences my work in general, but if you'd like hyperdetailed settlement patterns based in this reflecting a depth of history, then that can be arranged!

Mapwork

larger reference work

This could be seen as a direct next step to simple character artwork, and I've maintained a separate section for work like this for a long time for interested parties. Whether it's for your own benefit, for an expanded working team, or for other commissioned artists, this category is a shorthand for those works. Of course, you're free to ask and tack on other pieces as you like, but this is the format that I've found most useful for more clients over time.

£50 starts you off with 2 full body flat images with colour palettes and basic notes. From there, other features can be tacked on top, based on the previous character / object artwork categories - sketches to finished art.

Additionally smaller simple "doll" bases can be used to show many different outfits quickly and for less money than a whole new piece of art starting at £10 per base image.

As with the previous categories, if there's a lot of design legwork to do in making a cohesive impression of the character, then I may ask a little extra for that work.
